Aurelia Granny Square Christmas Ornament Pattern

Intro:

When I saw these square bauble ornaments at Michaels I knew I had the perfect square to put on them!! The Aurelia Granny Square has a beautiful 12 point star in the centre. By making the star one colour and the rest of the square another, these ornaments are a subtle yet beautiful addition to your Christmas tree. Merry Making everyone!!

How to 2 DC cl: YO and insert hook into center of circle, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2. Repeat one more time. YO and pull through 3 loops on hook, Ch 1.

Pattern Notes

In some cases, the video tutorials have been used for other patterns. Please follow the yarn recommendations, hook size and stitch counts in the written pattern- the videos are only meant as visual guides.
Gauge is IMPORTANT and will affect how the square fit the ornament.
Ch 2 counts as DC throughout.
Square Christmas baubles can be found at Michaels; they come in a 4 pack. Get them here. Michaels has them labelled 4” cubes, they measure about 3.5” in reality, and approximately an inch thick.
2 skeins of yarn are enough to make 6 ornaments.
Make 2 squares per ornament, seam together after.
I made 2 ornaments opposite of each other: 2 centres in Down with Oyster as the Main and 2 centres in Oyster with Down as the Main.

Aurelia Solid Granny Square

Make 2…

Round 1

With first colour, ch 5, sl st into 5th ch from hook (centre ring).
Ch 2, work 1 DC into centre ring, ch 1 (counts as first cl st).
Work 11 [2 DC cl] into centre ring (12 cl sts).
Join rnd with sl st to the ch-1 sp between the first and second cl sts at beginning of rnd, fasten off.

Round 2

Join second colour into any ch-1 sp and ch 2.
[1 DC, ch 2, 2 DC] into same sp (first corner).
*Work 2 DC into next ch-1 sp, twice.
Work [2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC] into next ch-1 sp.*
Repeat from * to * 2 more times.
Work 2 DC into next ch-1 sp, twice.
Join rnd with sl st into top of first DC (not the ch-2), do not fasten off.

Round 3

Ch 2, DC into same st.
*Work [2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC] into corner sp.*
Work a DC st into the top of each st across (8).*
Repeat from * to * 2 times.
Work [2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC] into corner sp.
Work a DC st into the top of each st across (6).
Join rnd with sl st into top of first DC (not the ch-2), do not fasten off.

Round 4

Ch 1, SC into same st and into the next 2 sts.
*Work 3 SC into corner sp.
Work a SC st into the top of each st across (12).*
Repeat from * to * 2 times.
Work 3 SC into corner sp.
Work a SC st into the top of each st across (8).
Join rnd with sl st into top of first SC (not the ch-1), fasten off.

Assembling Christmas Ornament

With WS of squares facing each other and RS facing out, use the same colour from rounds 2-4 to sl st squares together.
Remember to leave the top of the squares open enough to slip the ornament inside, then resume closing it up.
Fasten off, weave in ends.

Finishing Touches (Optional)…

I used some Christmas ribbon I had lying around to make cute little bows for my ornaments. The following video tutorial will show how to make the bows and attach them to your ornament (not without struggles!) I hope you enjoy a laugh…
