The Sedona Starburst Hexie Blanket is a fresh take on the Finley Starburst Hexie Blanket—this one contains the same starburst we know and love, with the same join BUT we’ve changed up the layout. This gives an opportunity to make some fun zig zag stripes which works up into an awesome fade. You guys are going to have so much fun playing with the colours on this one. It all began with my favourite yarn: Wool of the Andes Tweed by WeCrochet (affiliate link) . I’ve been hoarding-no, “collecting”….this yarn for years. Ever since a friend of mine told me about it-I’ve been in love. You may think-but Mal, there’s a lot of yarn out there…why this one? -I’m not sure, really. I just love the warmth of the tweedy flecks, the colours have always been amazing, and it works up beautifully! What’s not to love, really?

One night while nursing a sore throat and a hot lemon tea I decided to play a game on Instagram. I was bored and tired of coming up with colour combos (if I’m being entirely honest). So I put it out there that anyone on my Instagram could pick a colour combo and I’d make up the square. The response was immediate and wonderful.

This quickly turned into a thing and I couldn’t be more pleased with the results. While only a quarter of the squares for this blanket were combinations thought up by the wonderful crafting community, I knew I wanted to share the pattern for free with everyone. So here we are. The final push needed to finally get this website up and running. Welcome: The Hygge Burst Blanket Pattern.

Hygge (pronouced “Hue-guh”) is a Scandinavian word meaning everything that is cozy, happy, special, warm and nice. It’s used as a noun, a verb and an adjective! I fell in love with the idea of hygge after reading The Little Book of Hygge: The Danish Way to Live Well by Meik Wiking. For me, this blanket encompasses all the warmth, coziness and happiness that you can get from a blanket. I hope you all feel the same too.

For the last few years I’ve signed up for a year’s worth of yarn. It’s called a “monthly yarn subscription” consisting of 12 months of surprise skeins in the mail. Each month I crocheted the skeins into a Granny Stripe Blanket (1st year) and for the past year I’ve been making a granny square blanket from the “Year of Surprises Blanket Pattern” — this year I’m doing it again!!

You see, I thought I would try and make myself a temperature blanket. I started, stopped, amended, started again…and again…and again….

Eventually, after trying and failing to decide which kind of pattern I wanted for my temperature blanket, I decided it was way too big of a commitment for me (with the amount of other things I usually have on the go). But, I still liked the idea of a “yearly” blanket…. cue: the yarn subscriptions.

I discovered the idea of the yarn subscription sort of by chance—but loved the idea way more than a temperature blanket. Surprise, hand dyed merino wool in the mail…every month!?!?! -Sign me up!!

Pick your favourite 10 colours and let the fun begin. This pattern is easily adapted to make a fade, ombre, rainbow or whatever combination makes your heart sing. It’s put together in such a way that the first and last row match up creating the perfect balance. I hope you all have as much fun as I did playing with colour!
