Intro:

Hygge (pronouced “Hue-guh”) is a Scandinavian word meaning everything that is cozy, happy, special, warm and nice. It’s used as a noun, a verb and an adjective! I fell in love with the idea of hygge after reading The Little Book of Hygge: The Danish Way to Live Well by Meik Wiking.

The original Hygge Burst Hexie Blanket Pattern encompasses all the warmth, coziness and happiness that you can get from a blanket. I wanted the same feeling with this pattern—but brighter and fun for spring and summer. This particular collection is extra special to me. I love the Geode theme and the colours are absolutely gorgeous. They’re bright, pastel colours but with warm undertones that are perfectly wearable and make beautiful home accessories. Because of this, I chose to join my blanket with a brownish-grey colour that really brings out the earthy qualities of this collection.

The Yarn…

The Geode Collection is a set of 10 colours from Hue Loco Yarn. This particular collection is a special one because it lacks the speckles we’ve come to love from Nicole. This collection is new for them as it focuses on tonals and semisolids only. Of course, Hue Loco’s talent is amazing and this collection is further proof of that. I love everything about the colours and theme of this collection. As someone with a degree in Geology- it’s right up my alley!

I used the 10 colours to make up all the main hexies for my Hygge Burst Hexie blanket. I tried to use up as much as possible of the yarn to get the biggest blanket possible. Final quantities of each colour are listed below. Note: any differences in quantities are due to natural skein variances and personal tension. I made 11 hexagons with each colour from the collection, for a total of 110 hexies.

For the background and join of the blanket, I’m going to use my forever favourite Swish yarn from WeCrochet/Knit Picks. Every year during their Black Friday sale I stock up on DK and Worsted weight yarns from WeCrochet because they’re perfect for joining scarves, blankets, cowls, baby blankets-you name it! I always have a large stash on hand and it hasn’t failed me yet.

Hue Loco has also listed several colours if you’d like to use a different joining colour. If you like the Squirrel Heather that I used in my blanket—the closest colour to that is her “Earl Grey”.

Glossary (using US Crochet Terminology)

How to SC dec: Insert hook into st, YO and pull up a loop, insert hook into next st, YO and pull up a loop. There should be 3 loops on the hook. YO and pull through all 3 loops.

How to puff stitch (puff): YO and insert hook into st, YO and pull up a loop (pull up to about the height of a DC). Repeat 2 more times. There should be 7 loops on the hook. YO and pull through all 7 loops.

How to 4 DC cl: YO and insert hook into sp, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2. Repeat 3 more times. There should be 5 loops on the hook. YO and pull through all 5 loops.

Pattern Notes

Gauge will affect yarn quantities, please adjust hook size to meet gauge.
Ch 2 counts as DC throughout.
In some cases, the video tutorials have been used for other patterns. Please follow the yarn recommendations, hook size and stitch counts in the written pattern- the videos are only meant as visual guides.
*Please note: the joining yarn is 50g (half) skeins, if using regular full 100g skeins (like the Bare yarn I usually join blankets with)—you’ll need 6 to join.
The Colour Legend is my attempt to provide you with colour accurate photos/generic colour names that you can use if you’d like to find an alternative yarn (the actual yarn name and number code will be provided below in brackets).
I used all 10 colours from the Geode Collection for the hexagons in the blanket. Make 11 hexies from each skein weighing about 9g each.
Blanket is constructed using CJAYG, where each hexagon is joined to the next while completing another round on each motif. If you choose to join your blanket a different way-please note yarn quantities will differ (you’ll need more).

Pattern Sunburst Hexagon:

Make 11 hexagons of each colour…

Round 1

With first colour; Ch 5, sl st into 5th chain from hook to create centre ring.
Ch 2, work 17 DC into centre of ring (18 sts).
Join with sl st to the top of the first DC (not the ch-2), do not fasten off…

Round 2

Ch 1 and Puff into same st, ch 1.
[Puff, ch 1] into each st around (18 puffs).
Join with sl st into the ch-1 sp between the first two puff sts (not into the top of the first puff st), do not fasten off…

Round 3

Ch 2, into same sp work a [4 DC cl, ch 2].
Work [4 DC cl, ch 2] into each ch-1 sp around (18 cl sts).
Join with sl st into the ch-2 sp between the first two cls (not into the top of the cl st), do not fasten off…

Round 4

Ch 2, work [2 DC, ch 1, 3 DC] into same sp (first corner).
*Work 3 DC into the next ch-2 sp, twice.
Into next ch-2 sp work [3 DC, ch 1, 3 DC].*
Repeat from * to * 4 more times.
Work 3 DC into the next ch-2 sp, twice.
Join with sl st to the top of the first DC (not the ch-2).
Fasten off.

Assembling Motifs with Continuous Join-As-You-Go (CJAYGO)

With RS of hexagons face up, lay out all motifs in the arrangement from the colour graph above.
Using joining Colour K; start in top right-hand corner to join hexagons across the rows.
Example: First row will be joined from hexagon number 11 across to hexagon number 1. The second row will start with hexagon number 22 and be worked across to hexagon number 12.
Following along with the video tutorial, crocheting hexagons together until blanket is complete.
Once back to the start of the blanket (in the top right-hand corner)- DO NOT FASTEN OFF.
You are now ready to start border Round 1.
